Why Is Dr. Ohsumi’s Nobel Prize in Medicine Significant?

This week the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to a humble, 71-year-old Japanese man with a fridge full of baker’s yeast.

A molecular biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology in Yokohama, Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi was recognized for his research into “autophagy,” or the process by which cells recycle and disassemble themselves.
