Protein Is Only One Piece of the Nutritional Puzzle

It’s time to dispel a lot of the media hype currently forming around protein.

It's time to dispel a lot of the media hype currently associated with protein. Everyone out there seems to think there's a new brand of protein powder that is going to magically transform them into a super athlete with less than 10% body fat. That with no dedication, commitment, or awareness, anyone can achieve the ideal body shape they so desire.

Laird Hamilton: Smash Your Workout Routine Rut

If you are banging out the same sets of push-ups or squats every trip to the gym, I have bad news: You're wasting your time. Functional exercises — lunges, dead lifts, pull-ups, planks, push-ups, and squats — are the best way to get fitter, but the body adapts to them incredibly fast. It seems counterintuitive, but as muscles become more efficient at the movements, wo

Hike, Swing, and Park for More Kettlebell Power

The best kept secret for improving your swing technique isn’t just to keep swinging away and hope something happens.

Kettlebell swings work; of that there is no question. But the best kept secret for improving your swing technique, building volume, and supporting your conditioning isn't just to keep swinging away and hope something happens. Pairing heavy dead swings with over-speed eccentric work will improve those areas far more efficiently, and with greater skill transfer to other kettlebell movements.

A Few Thoughts at Olympic Halftime

Thoughts on Olympic performances, why the Olympics can’t only be for amateurs anymore, and our misguided notions of amateurism.

Well, even halfway through the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, there was plenty to catch up on. In my last entry on these pages, I mentioned the athletes that Canada, the USA, and Great Britain would be entering in the weightlifting events. Those athletes are all done now so before I go on any further I should report on their performances.

The Worst Time to Roll Down Your Car Windows

When cruising the open road, by all means roll down your windows and feel the breeze. But when driving in cities or crawling in heavy highway traffic, keep them shut—and turn off your AC or heater, too. Do this, and you’ll slash the amount of toxic particles pouring into your car by a whopping 76 percent.

Thank researchers at the University of Surrey in England for this lung

The Right Way to Add Rowing to Your Training Regime

Build your strength, power, and endurance on the rower by following these simple steps.

Everyone should row. And everyone can row. This is a fact my boat club's champions beautifully demonstrate. The members of Molesey Boat Club stretch from 14 to 84, and their fastest rowers stand top of Olympic podiums. Not everyone is tall and, I assure you, not all can row a sub-6 minute 2k. But we all share a passion for the sport and the movement.

4 Food Phrases That Don’t Mean Anything Anymore

What your food package says and what it means to your health aren’t always related.

With the growing awareness of how our eating habits impact our health, more people than ever are trying to improve their nutrition. While it is great to see health becoming more of a priority, it can be a challenge to separate fact from fiction, especially at the grocery store.

The Epidemic of Fairness

The concept of fairness has become perverted to excuse every misstep, lower standards, and discredit the efforts of the exceptional.

Youth sports and academics across the country are experiencing an epidemic that is systematically lowering the bar of expected performance. Parents, teachers, and coaches have always been berated with lines like “that’s not fair, its too hard”, or “that isn’t fair, (enter name here) gets to do it.” All good leaders in the classroom and on the field put long-term benefits over a child’s immediate desires. They ignore the urge to “be cool” and instead opt to foster discipline and willpower.

Lightening Fast Transitions

Transitions are one of the unique features of triathlons, and making them lightening fast can make all the difference.

The transition. It’s one of the most unique aspects of triathlon that you just don’t get with other sports. Although for some it’s simply a chance to take a short break before moving on to the next leg, for others it is more important and doing it well could decide the outcome of a race. Regardless which camp you fall into, having a transition built upon solid fundamentals will help reduce race-day stress and set you up for overall success out on the course.
